SECTION 2

CONNECT WITH DANBURY INTRO - CONNECT TO CENTRAL BETHEL
TO NORTHERN BETHEL - TO SOUTH BROOKFIELD - DANBURY'S INTERNAL NEEDS
TO NEW FAIRFIELD - TO SOUTH NEW MILFORD
- TO NEWTOWN - TO RIDGEFIELD

The sources of supply for the Bethel Water Department System (BWD) consist of three surface water reservoirs and one well field, which serve the high and low service areas.

The low service area, HGL 557.5, is supplied by the Eureka and Mountain Pond Reservoirs and the Maple Avenue Wells. The high service area, HGL 645.2, is supplied by the Chestnut Ridge Reservoir and by pumping from low service at the South Street booster station. The low service area borders Danbury, with Eureka Reservoir and its upstream source Mountain Pond actually in Danbury to the west of the Bethel Town Line.

BWD is currently investigating the construction of two new wells to eliminate the need to use Chestnut Ridge Reservoir. The treatment plant at Chestnut Ridge is old and in poor condition, although the water quality is reported to be good. The Eureka Reservoir produces poor water quality and its use is kept to a minimum.

The safe yield of the surface supplies is reported to be 0.5 MGD and the well field 0.87 MGD (18-hour pumping), for a total of 1.37 MGD. The total yield pumping the wells 24-hours per day would be 1.66 MGD.

The average day, maximum month, and peak day demands of the system for 2004 were reported to be 0.908 MGD, 0.915 MGD, and 1.085 MGD, respectively. Projected average day demands for 2010 and 2040 are 0.983 MGD and 1.091 MGD, respectively. This is well within the capacities of the existing sources of supply.

The BWD Water Supply Plan has identified a potential interconnection with the City of Danbury to be investigated as a backup in case of failure of supply. The location of the interconnection would be the intersection of Wooster Street and Great Pasture Road at the town line where both systems have 12-inch mains.

SEE MAP OF POTENTIAL CONNECTION

The Danbury Water System (HGL 603) is some 45.5 feet higher than the Bethel Low Service Area (HGL 557.5). The Danbury 12-inch main is connected to the 3 million gallon Tarrywile Tank with 16-inch and 20-inch transmission mains, and could supply up to 2 MGD, less consumption in Danbury.

The cost of the interconnection was estimated by BWD in 2001 as $25,000. Town Engineer Andrew Morosky confirmed that the interconnection would be only for emergencies, and that the BWD had adequate sources to meet its projected needs for the foreseeable future.

Two other interconnections with the Danbury System are proposed by developers, one on the west side of Route 53 at the town line and one near Danbury's Crow's Nest Tanks.

Also, note that the Bethel Water Department has a few customers in Danbury.
