The United
Water Connecticut Newtown System currently has adequate source
of supply to meet existing and future demands. The existing
safe yield is 1.177 MGD and the maximum available water 1.570
MGD.
The highest
consumptions recorded to date were in 2001, average day consumption
was 0.481 MGD with a margin of safety of 2.45; maximum month
was 0.674 MGD with a margin of safety of 1.75, and a peak
day of 0.935 MGD with a margin of safety of 1.68.
Average
day demand projection for 2020 is 0.501 and for 2050 is 0.581.
Projected margins of safety for peak day demands are also
adequate through 2050.
In 2004,
the average day demand was 0.453 MGD, the maximum month was
0.578 MGD, and the peak day was 0.681 MGD.
In 2003,
the distribution system was extended along Route 6 with a
12-inch main to within 600 feet of the Bethel Town Line. This
portion of the distribution system operates at an HGL of 630
controlled by a pressure reducing valve on Tory Lane.
This is
higher than the Bethel Consolidated System, which has an HGL
of 608. Therefore, pumping would be required to supply Newtown
from Bethel.
Of interest,
the Bethel Consolidated System is planning a main extension
along Route 6 to near the Newtown town line. An emergency
connection to close the gap of 600 to 800 feet would be feasible,
but a need in terms of a water supply deficit for the interconnection
has not been identified.
In case
of failure of supply or other emergency need, the connection
of the United Water Newtown System and the Danbury Water Department
System could be made through the proposed main on Route 6,
but would require pumping, as the HGL of 630 in Newtown is
higher than the HGL of 603 in the Danbury system.

The Town
of Newtown owns the State of Connecticut's former Fairfield
Hills water system. This system is operated for the Town by
Aquarion Water Company of Connecticut. This system is interconnected
with the United Water Connecticut System.
